Sorting Out UFC’s Lightweight Division

There is a bit of a log jam in the UFC’s lightweight division. Champion Benson Henderson is slated to fight Anthony Pettis. However, after that I am not certain how things unfold. T.J. Grant was declared the top contender on the heels of his impressive victory over Gray Maynard. Grant may have dibs on the Pettis vs. Henderson winner…if the winner is Henderson. If Pettis were to win, its likely Henderson would get a re-match.

There are a few other names in serious contender status. Josh Thomson, Pat Healy, and Khabib Nurmagomedov are all near the top of the division. The Gilbert Melendez vs. Diego Sanchez winner has to be sitting nicely as well. Here’s how I see it…

Champion: Ben Henderson

Top Contender(s): Anthony Pettis and T.J. Grant

At the Top: Gilbert Melendez, Josh Thomson, Pat Healy, Khabib Nurmagomedov

Knocking on the Door: Rafael Dos Anjos, Diego Sanchez, Donald Cerrone

On The Rise: Edson Barboza, Rustam Khabilov

Still Tough: Jim Miller, Nate Diaz, Melvin Guillard, and Gray Maynard

In my opinion, the division is going to work itself out. You have Healy and Nurmagomedov fighting, which will bring some clarity. Gilbert Melendez would be knocking on the door if he beats Sanchez. That really leaves Josh Thomson as the odd man out. He should get a good fight, maybe even T.J. Grant.

In my opinion,
