Report: UFC Will Add A Female Strawweight (115 lb) Division in 2014

There have been rumblings about the UFC considering to add a second female weight class. The initial thought was that UFC would add a 125 lb (flyweight) weight class for the females, but MMA Sun can confirm that the premiere MMA organization is set to add a 115 lb (strawweight) female weight class in 2014. In fact, sources have confirmed that several of the world’s top strawweight female fighters have been contacted by Zuffa.
For many years, UFC president Dana White was adamantly opposed to women fighting in the UFC. He had on numerous occasions said that “women will never fight in the UFC.” However, seeing the talent and popularity of Ronda Rousey changed his mind. Also, the UFC included female fighters on the Ultimate Fighter season 18, and they have been a higher ratings draw than the men. Perhaps the UFC hopes to duplicate the success of their female bantamweight division with the strawweight division.
There is no word on the exact date that the division will be launched or which fighters they will sign, but we can assume that they would target the top female fighters in that division. The division includes names like Jessica Aguiar, Felice Herrig, Carla Esparza, Claudia Gadelha, Katja Kankaanpaa and Joanna Calderwood.
