MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Flyweights – #2– Henry Cejudo

MMA Sun’s #2 Flyweight prospect is one of the coolest stories of our series. Coming in at #2 is Henry Cejudo. Henry was a decorated High School wrestler in Arizona. When Henry graduated High School he took a unique route to the Olympics. He qualified for the Unites States freestyle wrestling team and the 2008 Olympics in Bejing. It was there that he became the youngest American wrestler to ever win an Olympic gold medal.

There have been numerous decorated amateur wrestlers to transition to MMA, but it isn’t every day that an Olympic gold medalist ventures into the sport.   Cejudo has taken up training at Fight Ready gym in Scottsdale, Arizona.  Many have long contended that wrestling is the best base for prolonged success in MMA. I agree. No one brings a better wrestling pedigree to the table than Cejudo. Based on that alone, Cejudo is at #2 on our list.  Cejudo is already 5-0 in his MMA career.  He will look to add another win to his resume as he takes a step up in competition to face the undefeated Elias Garcia at Legacy Fighting Championship 27 on January 31, 2014.

Naturally, in his MMA fight Cejudo has shown the ability to control where a fight takes place.  He has shown surprisingly decent hands as Cejudowell.  He understands top control and positioning very well.  Also we have seen very good ground and pound from him. Cejudo can be absolutely relentless with his pressure and attack.  He has shown an ability to stay away from submissions and has been able to control people from the top.  He loves to stack his opponents and land punches.

I do not foresee fighters at 125 lbs being able to put Cejudo on his back for long.   Henry is very strong for a flyweight and can rag doll opponents. Any fighter who has mastered an art like Cejudo has wrestling should be able to become more than competent in any other art they set their minds to learning.  It is hard to believe that Henry is just 25 years-old.

The question with Henry is not his ability, it is his desire.  Is he fully committed to MMA?  Is he willing to embrace the grind of mixed martial arts the way he did with amateur wrestling?  If he is, then the sky is the limit.  Cejudo has a lot of irons in the fire.  Certainly with sponsors and other endeavors money is not the issue.  I know he is still in school, heavily involved with many charities and does a lot of speaking and other things.  He is a busy man.  With his wrestling ability alone he would be able to compete with many in the UFC.  If you add to that the total package of Jiu Jitsu and boxing as well you have a dangerous specimen.

I think Cejudo is highly skilled and has to be drawing interest from the UFC. He is famous, well spoken and marketable. I would imagine the UFC would love to have someone like Cejudo not only representing the U.S. in MMA, but also as they venture into Mexico.
