MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Bantamweights – #4 – Thomas Almeida

Our #4 bantamweight prospect is Brazilian sensation Thomas Almeida.  Perhaps the most impressive resume of all of our bantamweight thomasalmeidaprospects in that Almeida is 15-0 and every one of his wins have come by stoppage.  He has not gone to a decision one time.  In fact, he has only left the first round one time.  Currently signed to Texas based Legacy Fighting, Almeida is looking to make waves in the United States.

At just 22 years of age, the Chute Boxe trained fighter seems bound for the UFC.  The question does not seem to be “if” it seems to be “when” and my guess is sooner rather than later.  When any fighter starts to build a record like Almeida’s it is worthy of attention.  Like so many fighters in Brazil though, the question for Thomas is level of competition.  While 15-0 is impressive and the way he has finished is impressive, he hasn’t faced the toughest competition.  Don’t get me wrong, Almeida has done exactly what an elite fighter should do against weaker competition. Thomas has some Muay Thai experience, boasting a 29-2 record in the sport.  This background is evident in his MMA fights as he shows superior striking technique.   Almeida has the ability to finish when he hurts his opponents and seems to be able to really turn up the heat at times.  On the other hand, he gets hit too frequently.  I have seen him get rocked a few times.  To some degree you have to credit his heart for enduring.  His striking is very smooth and Almeida has power in his hands and makes good use of his knees, and elbows  He really has great power for a bantamweight, and that comes from very good technique.  There are times when he just touches opponents and they fall down.  The bottom line is that Almeida has made quick work of every opponent he has faced.  Time will tell how will do against better quality opponents.

I would be surprised if Almeida is not signed to a major promotion in 2014.  I can say quite certainly that he is on UFC match maker Sean Shelby’s radar.   Thomas is a fun fighter to watch and one that fans will want to keep their eye on.
