MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Featherweights – #5– Chas Skelly

Coming in at #5 on our featherweight prospect spotlight is Chas Skelly. The 28-year old Team Takedown fighter is most likely on the verge Skelly_Chasof a UFC or Bellator chance.  Boasting an 11-0 record, Skelly is poised for a big year.

Skelly, like all Team Takedown is a wrestler. He has wrestled since he was 5 years old. He was a High School State champion and College all-american at Missouri Baptist University. Skelly has a grinding style.   He uses his size and strength well.  Skelly has really good top control and really good wrestling.  He can win a lot of fights with those skills alone.  He already has quite a nice career resume with wins over Daniel Pinieda and Jarrod Card.  He has fought on Bellator under cards and has fought for Legacy FC, where he has climbed the ranks there.  Skelly’s striking is our biggest concern for his long term prospects.  He will have to continue to improve his striking skills. To be fair, there are plenty of fighters who have had high level success with much more questionable striking skills.  A high level wrestling and submission game can carry a fighter very far.  While Chas is a wrestler, he does not simply “lay and pray”, only three of his fights have gone to a decision.  He is able to use ground and pound and hunt for submissions from the top position.

With the success of his teammate Johny Hendricks, we would think that it would bolster interest in a guy like Skelly.  We also think that he could draw significant interest from Bellator.  Either way, we are quite confident that in 2014 Skelly will be signed to a major promotion.  His manager had recently hinted that he may be near a UFC offer.  Regardless, Skelly is slated to fight in Texas on January 16th, a win there could be his last outside a big promotion.

Note: Skelly is putting on a charity grappling tournament on January4th for my Aunt Debbie Skelly that is battling breast cancer. Details can be found at www.xko.net
