MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Lightweights – #8– Frankie Perez

Number 8 on our lightweight list is Frankie Perez. Perez is 24-years old and has an undefeated record of 7-0. Currently he is training out of FrankiePerezRicardo Almeida BJJ. He gets the opportunity to train with boxing trainer Mark Henry as well as guys like Ricardo Almeida and Frankie Edgar.

Perez is a guy with a lot of talent. He did not grow up training in martial arts, but he has picked it up quickly. He has picked up four of his seven wins via submission, so he has shown that he is a threat to finish fights with submissions. Frankie just recently earned his brown belt in BJJ from Ricardo Almeida.  He has some Muay Thai fighting experience, but he isn’t known for his striking prowess.  Frankie is willing to throw knees when he is in range, and kicks from out of range. He does have good length, at 5’11”. One key for Perez is learning to use his length to his advantage. Perez is also filling out as he matures.  He is a big 155, who walks around well above the lightweight limit.  He is deceptively strong as well. He has shown sufficient takedown defense in his fights.   We believe that with Perez’s well rounded game and the quality training he receives that he has the potential to really do well in the sport.  He is still young and developing his skills.  His jiu jitsu will always be his strong suit, but his boxing and muay thai are solid, and his wrestling will continue to improve.

Perez is currently preparing for a fight against Mike Santiago on January 24th at Ring of Combat 47.  I do not believe that it will take many more wins in Ring of Combat for Perez to draw attention from the UFC or even Bellator.   As we have said before it bodes well for him that he is training with Ricardo Almeida and Mark Henry.  It is always beneficial for a fighter to train with proven trainers and alongside high level training partners.  Perez very well could be getting a  call from a major promotion with a win in his next fight.
