MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Welterweights – #4 – Tom Breese

British welterweight Tom Breese is a guy that I am excited about. We put him at number four on our list for his weight class. I think his tombreeseceiling is really high. Breese is currently recovering from a ACL injury, and if it wasn’t for that he may be even higher on the list. If he can recover well, he could be a really solid prospect. It is important to remember that Breese is just 22-years old.

Breese has never lost in his professional career. He also boasts an undefeated amateur career. One thing that is interesting is that he has finished every opponent set before him within the distance. Currently training out of both Fearless MMA in Birmingham and Tristar Gym in Montreal, Breese has intentionally sought out some of the best in the world to help prepare him for the best in the world. He has competed some in freestyle wrestling, Thai boxing and submission grappling and says that he has a big passion for boxing. He won the The BAMMA British welterweight title, but vacated that title to sign with Cage Warriors in May.  He has won a lot of his fights by submission.  Five of his pro fights have been won with some form of submission.  He is very creative with his submissions and makes good use of the rubber guard.  He will go for omoplatas and gogoplatas.  Breese appears to have a very good back control, which he very effectively gets the rear naked choke.  He is very slick in his transitions from one position to another.  His wrestling and takedowns are very effective as well.  Breese has good size for the weight class at 6’2″. One thing that stands out is how cool, calm and collected Breese is inside the cage.  This is very impressive for a guy of his age.  His striking is progressing very nicely as well.  He is learning to make use of his length.  I believe that as his striking improves he will become a dual threat fighter.

He is currently a few months post surgery and the healing process is going great. He says, “I’m ahead of schedule but will not rush coming back. I will be back to full training June or July 2014 and plan to be back fighting late 2014 early 2015. I want to improve my whole game before rushing back and I have time as I will only be 23 years old when I return.”  We won’t see Breese in the UFC in 2014, but we he will be on everyone’s radar with a successful return.
