MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Middleweights – #9 – Max Nunes

Our number 9 middleweight prospect is Swede Max “Power” Nunes.   Max Nunes was one of my top prospects in the light heavyweightMaxNunes division.  However, a disappointing loss to Jason Jones really seemed to expose some weaknesses in his game.  Subsequently, Nunes has dropped to the middleweight division where he is 1-0.  We really believe that Nunes has a very high ceiling as a fighter.  At just 24-years old Nunes has room to continue to develop as a mixed martial artist.

Nunes has an 11-1 career mark, which includes 11 finishes.  At 6’4″, Nunes is a very big middleweight.  His size is a huge advantage for him.  Not only is he physically large, but he is very athletic.  He makes good use of his distance, utilizing his jab effectively and also frequently employing leg kicks.  Nunes seems to be at his best when he is in a top position on the ground.  He has shown very solid ground and pound from the top.  He has power from within his opponents guard. His takedowns are also very effective.  In most of his fights he has been able to dictate where the fight takes place.  However, his defensive wrestling is lacking.  He seems to also have a solid submission game.  In fact, 6 of his fights have been won by way of submission.   There have been times where he has been put on his back too easily, and he has struggled from that position.  There also have been a few fights where he has been hurt badly on the feet.  However, Nunes is improving and the drop in weight classes should help some of those issues.  He is currently training at the New Wave Academy in England.  It is my opinion that if Nunes wants to have sustained success at a high level he may need to consider training at a higher level gym.  H has trained some in Sweden alongside Alexander Gustafsson, which is a better long term solution.  I really like Nunes’ potential.  His athleticism and physical gifts make him an intriguing prospect.  As with all fighters he has some holes in his game, but we are confident that those holes can be mended.

It is very likely that Nunes is in line for a shot at the BAMMA middleweight champion, Scott Askham.  The winner of that fight would be in a great position and would probably be firmly on the UFC radar.
