MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Middleweights – #6 – Andrew Sanchez

Our number six middleweight prospect is Andrew Sanchez. Sanchez is a 4-1 fighter who has tons of potential. In fact, through evaluating andrewsanchezthese prospect, we believe his ceiling is very high as a fighter.

Sanchez’s background is wrestling. He has a very impressive wrestling resume. He was a 4 time NAIA All American, a 2 time National Champion and the NAIA Wrestler of Year in 2011 at McKendree College. His wrestling game has translated well into MMA. He has also proven to have a very solid submission game. Two of his four wins have come via submission. He was also the Pan American Champion in the Purple Belt Division. Currently training primarily out of Finney’s MMA, Sanchez is a fighter who is constantly improving his game. Sanchez also trains alongside Rodrigo Vaghi, the same guy who trained Jake Ellenberger for years. In his MMA debut he showcased solid wrestling against a much larger opponent, and finished by rear naked choke.  His lone loss came at the hands of UFC and Glory veteran Dustin Jacoby.  In fact, it was a fight that he was doing quite well in before he had an eye injury that impacted the course of the fight.  Sanchez really impressed in his RFA debut by making quick work of Todd Meredith.  He showed great ground and pound to finish that fight.  Sanchez is a great grappler.  I do not believe that any opponent would want Sanchez to have top position on them. If he can continue to improve his striking he can really become an elite type of fighter.  In many fights Sanchez can rely on his wrestling ability to win fights and avoid damage, but as he climbs the ranks he will need to become a threat with his hands.

At just 25-years old, Sanchez is poised to make a big impact in MMA.  We certainly feel that his solid wrestling base makes him a danger to most of his opponents.  Before Sanchez can start to think about the UFC or Bellator he has a very tough fight on his hands against our number 10 ranked middleweight prospect, Miles Marshall at RFA in March.  Not only is Sanchez a fighter, but he is the lead guitarist of an all fighter band called “The Cauliflowers”.  While he may have skills playing the guitar, we think he should stick to MMA because the future is bright.
