MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Light Heavyweights – #7– Gideon Drotschie

Our number 7 light heavyweight prospect is South African fighter Gideon Drotschie.  The MMA scene in South Africa is quite new, but Gideon-DritschieGideon Drotschie might be one of the most promising prospects in the region.  The current EFC Light Heavyweight champion has impressed in his five professional fights.  He has not lost once.  His resume includes a win over the very tough Fraser Opie.  Gideon has finished every one of his opponents.  He currently trains at Rico Hattingh’s MMA Academy in Cape Town, South Africa.  At just 26-years old we expect to hear more from the fighter known as “The Juggernaut”.

Having only began training MMA since 2010, Drotschie is still relatively new to the sport.  Drotschie has shown himself to be very well rounded.  If you asked Gideon about his fight style, he would tell you that his base is MMA.  He has power in his punches.  He also mixes up his strikes very well.  In his short career, he has found success in every area of the fight.  He has looked strong in the clinch.  He has shown off his submission skills as well as a very nice double leg takedown.  I was really impressed with a few things about Drotschie.  One thing that stood out was the diversity in his striking.  He not only throws his hands, but he throws nice kicks.  He has a lot of tools in his chest.  One of the things that he has employed in a front kick to the face, he has used it almost like a jab.  Also, his ground and pound is very effective.  He was won 3 of his 5 fights by use of punches and elbows.

I like Drotschie’s progresssion as a fighter.  I also think he has an advantge in being one of the few elite prospects in South Africa.  UFC has spoken some about making a trip to a place like South Africa, and if they did I would be almost certain that Drotschie would be one of the first people they would bring with them.
