MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Light Heavyweights – #2– Jan Blachowicz

Number 2 on our Light Heabyweight Prospect spotlight is Jan Blachowicz. Blachowicz should be a name that those that follow prospects are Jan-Blachowiczquite familiar with. He has been a highly ranked prospect for some time. In fact, we find it fairly strange that he has not had a offer from the UFC to this point.  The current KSW Light Heavyweight champion has career victories over some solid names such as UFC veterans Goran Reljic, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, Houston Alexander,  and Mario Miranda.  He also has victories over some of the regions best light heavyweights such as Maro Perak, Christian M’Pumbu, Daniel Tabera and Antoni Chmielewski.  He has won 14 of his last 15, and he avenged that one loss.  It would be hard to find a more UFC ready light heavyweight in the world.

Blachwoicz may be the most technically advanced of our light heavyweight prospects. He uses his reach to his advantage.  Many taller fighters that we have previewed do not utilize their size and reach…Blachowicz does.  While his striking is very effective, we have seen him over extend on occasions.  He uses kicks to legs and to the body.  He also is comfortable in the clinch.  His takedown defense is not bad, but it is not great either.   Blachowicz has a decent guard.  He does attack off of his back.  More than that he does a good job trapping arms and preventing damage from his opponents.  His jiu jitsu is really solid.  He is a brown belt in BJJ.   He is even more dangerous from top position.  His guard passes are very effective and he has been able to get to side control often in his fights.  He also stays active from the top and has been effective in causing damage.  He has won several of his fights by submission, so he has proven that he is a threat on the ground as well as on the feet.

Blachowicz has publicly spoken about his desire to fight for the UFC, so we believe it is only a matter of time. With Poland on the UFC’s itinerary this year, I would be shocked if Blachowicz isn’t invited to participate on that event.
