MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Heavyweights – #9– Cody East

Our number 9 heavyweight prospect is Cody “The Freight Train” East. East is a 24-year old stand out in New Mexico who has fought mostly Cody-Eastunder the King of the Cage banner. I really think Cody has UFC level talent if he can get a few things straightened out. East has a solid 8-1 career mark which includes a win over Nick Rossborough.

Cody come from a wrestling background, having wrestler at New Mexico State. He really does have the ability to control opponents with his wrestling. In many of his fights, however, he has chosen to stand and strike. He has really improved his boxing skills throughout his career. He has even dabbled in professional boxing. Cody can be super aggressive on his feet, especially early on in a fight. Often his punches come from his hips, so his punching technique would not be defined as “crisp”. Nevertheless, he has been effective. Cody does a good job landing his knees from inside the clinch position. He seems to be physically strong. He is also a good height for the division at 6’3″ he has a good reach, which he really hasn’t learned to utilize fully. One other question I have with Cody is his cardio. In his lone loss, he seemed to gas quickly.  Cody really needs to fix cardio issues.  I will say that East is incredibly tough.  He can flat out take punishment, but that isn’t always a good thing.  The best fighters take the least damage.  However, his toughness does speak to his heart. East has trained at Greg Jackson’s some throughout his career, so that certainly has to help him training with high level heavyweights.

My top concern for Cody’s progression is not what he can do inside the cage, but it is what he does outside the cage. Just like his brother, Tyler, Cody has had his share of legal issues. He has spent some time in jail. I thought about not even including him on this list (I left his brother off due to legal issues), but I feel he has serious potential as a fighter. With the heavyweight division really lacking in new blood and young contenders, a guy like Cody could do quite well. If he elects to stay in and out of trouble with the law he would ruin his future and throw away a lot of money.  In conclusion, Cody has as much talent and as high of a ceiling as any heavyweight prospect.  I am hoping he continues to improve and grow as a fighter and a man in 2014.
