MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Flyweights – #10 – Nildo Nascimento

Coming in at number ten on our flyweight Prospect Spotlight is Brazilian Nildo “Katchal” Nascimento. Nildo is the Jungle Fight flyweight champion. Nildo is a fighter Nildokatchalthat the more I watched the more impressed I was with him. I think that he is a guy that the UFC could target soon. He may need another win or two to get there, but he is on the right track.  At 25-years old he certainly has room to continue his progression.

Nascimento’s best performance was in his last fight against a very solid Rayner Silva. In that fight he showed a variety of skills. One of the things that stands out when you watch him fight is that he has very good footwork. He uses that footwork to get inside his opponents and land strikes. His striking looks very crisp and technical. He likes to end combinations with hard leg kicks.  He also seems to have good counter strikes.  In his fight against Rayner he showed some heart, a solid chin and the ability to land hard strikes while hurt or while moving backwards.  Nildo’s best weapon seems to be his leg kicks.  He absolutely targets his opponent’s legs with hard strikes.  That aspect is somewhat reminiscent of Jose Aldo.  As far as his ground game, he has shown that he can get taken down when he gets a little bit wild and over extended, but seems to have decent takedown defense.  I do not think Nildo is a real threat off of his back and really does not seem to hunt submissions.  He prefers striking.  Even when he has an opponent hurt, he would rather use ground and pound than hunt a submission.

One of the areas of concern for Nildo is his height. He is listed at 4’11”. It is hard to imagine a fighter sub-five foot tall making an impact among the best in the world. He was able to deal with that somewhat against a much taller Iago Gomes.  In that fight he utilized his kicks, moved in and out nicely and finished the fight with a very nice body kick.  Nildo has fought some very good flyweights in Brazil and it has not been a factor, but I think it could be.  Nildo needs to avoid wild exchanges as well.  His sole loss came at the hands of a very good bantamweight in Mario Israel.  It would be interesting to see how he would do against a guy who is more of a takedown threat.  I am always hesitant of making big name comparisons for prospects, but there are moments when watching Nildo that he looks like Jose Aldo.  Do not misunderstand, he has not fought elite competition nor does he have an elite ground game.  My point is that his striking and movement has some similarities.

Being the Jungle Fight champion is a great route to UFC.  UFC has seemed to be quite found of the Jungle Fight fighters.  So Nascimento is in a good place to get noticed.  I am sure Sean Shelby is aware of Nildo.   Time will tell how he progresses as he fights stiffer competition, but I think that eventually we see him in UFC.  I find it very difficult to project Nildo’s career trajectory.  I feel he could do very well against some very high level UFC flyweights.  I also feel there are some pretty sub-par UFC flyweight who would make easy work of him.  I think a lot depends on matchmaking for Katchal.
