MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Flyweights – #9 – Yuki Motoya

Number 9 on our flyweight prospect list is Japanese fighter Yuki Motoya.  Motoya is just 25-years old, but has a very impressive 12-4 career mark.  With that said, YukiMotoyaMotoya has to be one of the brighter prospects in Japan currently.  There are many who are very high on his ability.  Some would call him the best flyweight prospect in Japan.  His sole loss since 2012 is a split decision loss to Tatsumitsu Wada.  He has since avenged that loss to Wada.  Wada really has a strong resume which includes wins over Masakatsu Imanari and Yoshihiro Maeda.

In his fight against leg lock expert Imaari, Motoya repeatedly landed hard leg kicks, walked forward with his hands down a la Nick Diaz and staved off leg lock attempts en route to a unanimous decision victory.  Motoya has shown a solid array of skills.  He seems very comfortable on the mat and has notched several of his victories via submission.  He also does not seem to fear his opponents submission attempts and has show good submission defense.  Motoya also seems willing to engage on the feet.  He sometimes even engages in wild exchanges.  Against Maeda he put on one of the wildest single round performances I can remember.  His striking in not exactly crisp, but it has shown effective.  He mixes up punches and kicks well.  There is noticeable improvement in his striking game,  The thing is, Motoya is still relatively new to the sport.  I would expect him to continue to improve.  The DEEP flyweight champion is one of the bright spots in Japanese MMA.

One of the worries I have about Motoya is that he leaves his chin up high in the midst of some of his exchanges making him very susceptible to the knockout.  It is no secret that many Japanese fighters have struggled against their North American counterparts.  I see no reason why Motoya should fit that mold.  He would not be terribly undersized at flyweight.  He is not one dimensional and he has a very solid striking game.   I would expect that the UFC would have interest in picking up someone like Motoya sooner rather than later.
