MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Flyweights – #6 – Kevin Petshi

French flyweight Kevin Petshi comes in at number 6 on our Prospect Spotlight this year. Petshi has an unblemished 7-0 record and is a part of a growing group of PetshiFrench prospects.    While Petshi’s record is certainly impressive, there are still some uncertainties surrounding him.  First and foremost is the level of competition he has faced.  At just 24-years old, Petshi is still young enough to develop into an elite level fighter.

One of the first things that stood out about Petshi was his athleticism.  He is very quick, athletic and strong for a flyweight.  Petshi is a very good grappler, who possesses a solid power double leg takedown. Petshi is super aggressive on the mat as he transitions well, looks to pass guard and at the same time lands strikes.  It is not a good idea to be underneath him.   He also is well versed in submissions.  Petshi does not look bad on his feet, but he really seems to love leg kicks more than hand strikes.  His attacks are not bad, but his striking defense certainly has some holes and has need of improvement.  He uses his strikes well to set up takedowns and if an opponent is off balance he will capitalize on it.

Like many French fighters he was fought many times under different rules than UFC fans are used to.  He has fought many times in France, where strikes on the ground are not allowed.  I believe that as he learns to utilize ground and pound to his advantage he will go to another level.  Petshi has fought in a variety of different martial arts tournaments including grappling and sanda.  The question for Petshi is not his natural abilities, bur rather how those abilities really stack up to elite competition.  I would say that Petshi needs to continue to improve in all areas, but he is not showing glaring holes either.  He is able to compensate with his explosiveness and athleticism.

The UFC has a serious plan to break into mainland Europe.  In order for them to find success, they will need to find some stars from countries like France.  I think this certainly bods well for Petshi’s chances of getting a UFC contract offer.   I also think Petshi has the skills to do well in the UFC.  He is certainly one of France’s brightest prospects.
