MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Bantamweights – #9 – Henry Corrales

Number 9 on our 2015 Bantamweight Prospect Spotlight is King of the Cage champion, Henry Corrales.  Corrales has compiled a perfect 11-0 career recordHenryCorralesthat includes solid wins over guys like Set Dikun and Jerod Spoon.  At 28-years old, Corrales is ready to make an impact in the big show.  I believe it is time for him to move past the regional fight scene and into bigger promotions.  He is a training partner of UFC bantamweight contender Francisco Rivera, so he certainly gets experience in the gym against high level fighters.

Corrales is both athletic and explosive.  Corrales has a pretty decent ground game that is seen with solid submission ability.  He has finished fights with a variety of different submissions (quiliotine, kimura, armbar, rear naked choke), which shows his submission diversity. There were a few times in fights where he put himself in some danger, and I would like to see him be a little more careful.   Corrales seems more comfortable on the mat than on the feet.  Corrales has solid takedowns that are often times very powerful.  Henry has some lightning quick transitions as well.  I really did not see him challenged often on his back, but it does look like he will need to imporve his takedown defense in order to compete against higher level opponents.

Corrales has some power in his strikes.  He has shown the ability to finish on his feet.  Often times in exchanges he got the better of opponents.  He likes to target the body, which is very effective.  In many of his fights the body was a main target.  He also will make good use of his elbows when in close ranger.  He also has a very good chin.  While that is a good thing, I would like to see him test that chin less often.  I worry about how it would hold up against better strikers in the UFC.  While Corrales has spent a good deal of time fighting at 145 pounds, his place in the UFC would be at 135 pounds.  Corrales is not overwhelming at any ones aspect of MMA, but seems to be solid everywhere.

Depending on his King of the Cage contract, I would expect Corrales to be on a short list of fighters the UFC might target in 2015.  I also would not be shocked if Bellator became a player for someone like Corrales.  Perhaps the right opportunity will pop up for him.
