MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Featherweights – 5 Who Just Missed Our Top Ten

As we gear up to unveil the top ten featherweight prospects for 2015, we found it difficult to whittle down our list to 10. For each weight class we have done five left overs, but in all honestly we could have done 10 more featherweight prospects that were worthy of a mention.  The featherweight division may be one of the most prospect laden divisions in MMA.  Nevertheless, we want to reveal the five fighters in the featherweight division who just missed the cut for the 2015 MMA Sun Prospect Spotlight.

1.  Rasul Mirzaev – 28 years old – 9-0 – I have to give a disclaimer here.  I did not know what to do with Mirzev.  He is top 10.  He may be rasul-mirzaevtop 5.  He may even be a top 3 featherweight prospect in terms of talent, but he has some issues.  In 2012, he was convicted of manslaughter in Russia, but has since resumed his fighting career.  His legal issues haven thus far prevented him from getting a visa to fight in North America.  I would imagine that there is possibility of him signing for a company like OneFC, but it is hard to spotlight a guy for the major promotions to look at that cannot fight for them.  Not too long ago, Rasul signed with RFA, but once against Visa issued hampered that plan.

2. James Jenkins – 8-1 – Jenkins is a Serra-Longo product that certainly has a good chance to has a chance to make it to the UFC on the basis of association as well as skill.  Jenkins has signed a deal with TitanFC, which is also a good career step.  Jenkins is constantly improving and has great submission skills and improving striking.  There have been rumblings before about Jenkins to the UFC.  The Ring of Combat featherweight champion will probably need a few more wins.

3. Arman Ospanov – 25 years old – 6-0 – The Kazakh fighter is another to keep an eye on.  Ospanov is probably underrated, but it is hard to tell because of the lack of quality of competition.  He does have a notable victory over J.P. Reese. He trains at Alash Pride and may have a real chance of getting picked up by a major promotion soon.

4. Ivan Buchinger – 28 years old – 28-4 – Slovakian fighter, Ivan Buchinger is super experienced for his age.  The current M-1 featherweight champion has fought some very solid competition so far.   His four losses have come to very solid competition including current UFC fighters Conor McGregor and Akira Corassani.  He has shown to be a very good all around fighter, having finished many of his fights along the way.

5. Alex Enlund – 27 years old – 11-2 – The current Cage Warriors featherweight champion is one who climbed onto our radar fairly quickly throughout 2014.  The UK based fighter is certainly making a name for himself throughout his native England.  I would imagine with a couple more wins that the UFC or Bellator will come calling for his services as well.  I battled in my mind who would be the last fighter on my “Just Missed” list between Alex Enlund and 19-year old Khusin Askhabov (9-0).  While Askhabov has tons of upside due to his age, Enlund is the better fighter right now.  Winning the Cage Warriors title is a big deal.  I believe Enlund to be one of the top European Featherweights.
