MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Featherweights – #6 – Arnold Allen

Arnold Allen is the seventh ranked of our top ten featherweight prospects for 2015. Allen hails from England and is one of the brightestArnold Allen prospects in all of the U.K. One of the things that makes Allen special is that he is just 20-years old (almost 21).  Allen’s potential is very, very high and we believe he could make a big impact in the featherweight division in coming years.  Arnold “Almighty” has a 9-1 career record that has some solid names on his resume.  He has steadily improved, which shows a very high skill trajectory.  Allen trains out of BKK Fighters in England.

Fighting seems to be in Allen’s DNA.  His father, a former strongman competitor has also fought professional mixed martial arts.  Allen is a well rounded fighter who has trained in all aspects of the game from a very early age.  Allen is far beyond his years.  He has solid boxing skills.  He also seems to have good size for the featherweight class.  We would expect him to continue to fill out his frame.  Allen’s striking can be very crisp at times and appears to be able to land with power.  He uses food footwork and muay thai skills to get in and out of striking range.  When he is methodical he has the ability to pick guys apart.  In his lone loss, there were times he got wild and paid for it.  His long limbs certainly will benefit him at range, which is where he best served.

Allen is not helpless when the fight hits the ground as he has shown the ability to finish by way of submission as well.  While he has good takedowns and has shown good submission defense, I would like to see him be a bit more careful to secure solid positioning before transitioning.  There were times he got swept or put in a more precarious situation because he got a bit sloppy on the ground.  I like Allen’s takedown ability as well.  Another aspect of his lone loss was that he really got tired.  It was not just a cardio issue, but his opponent just stuck to him and wore him out.  His versatility is certainly one of his strong point.  He has good ground and pound and does well from inside the guard inflicting damage and posturing up.

Allen is not quite ready for the big show, but he will be soon enough.  Don’t misunderstand, he could compete with some UFC featherweights today.  He needs a bit more time to develop and to improve his all around game.  It seems like it is just a matter of time until he gets a big opportunity.  Allen really reminds me of Jordan Mein.  Mein’s father was a fighter as well, but they both have similar games.  Like Mein, Allen is well rounded and seems very likely to be among the best one day.
