MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Lightweights – #9 – David Khachatryan

The number 9 lightweight prospect on our 2015 Prospect Spotlight is David Khachatryan. The 27-year old Armenian fighter is one of the David Khachatryanmore fun fighters on our list. Not only is Khachatryan fun to watch, but I have to believe he is on the verge of the UFC. Khachatryan boasts a 16-2 career record.  When I first looked at David Khachatryan I did not think he was as big and strong as he has proven to be.

Khachatryan is very aggressive in his striking. Sometimes this aggressivness leaves him open for counters, but he is usually the one pushing the pace of a fight. He also seems comfortable in most aspects of the fight game.  He has a knack for landing some wild shots at times.  He also is diverse in his striking.  He mixes in knees very well.  He has power in his hands and that brings with it the ability to end fights with one good punch.  He also likes to target the body with his punches.  This is something that not many up and coming fighters do.  This is very effective in damaging an opponent and making them tired.  He also has spinning attacks that he uses.  They are not his best weapon, but he does use spinning back fists and spinning kicks from time to time.

He excels in the top position and is very dangerous from there.  He has also shown some submission ability.  It seems most of his wins have come from the ground, whether it be from strikes or submission.  He has also shown some good submission defense.  In one fight, he got caught in a deep armbar, and he refused to tap.  I am not sure if that is a testament to his defense or toughness.  In a perfect world, he would not get caught at all.  However, he has shown that when put in a bad position he will not easily quit.  Khachatryan has a good sprawl and seems to really prefer to be in a slugfest.

I worry about how he would do against elite competition as he has not fought great competition.  I also worry about his training.   He has hinted at moving to America to train, which could really be helpful to him. Nevertheless, I think he has potential to be a fan favorite in the UFC.  He could have a career trajectory similar to someone like Abel Trujillo or even a Diego Brandao.  Again, I would not be surprised if the UFC comes calling soon.
