MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Lightweights – #7 – Steven Ray

The number 7 lightweight prospect this year is Cage Warriors champion, Steven Ray. Ray is a 24-year old Scotish fighter who has a great StevenRaychance to make it to the UFC this year. UFC has announced a plan to hold an event in Scotland and I would be shocked if Ray is not targeted for that event somehow. Ray has a 16-5 career record that includes back to back wins over UFC veteran Curt Warburton.

Ray’s striking has really consistently improved throughout his fights.  He look good out of the southpaw stance and is very accurate with a straight left hand.  He has really started mixing in kicks more frequently.  Ray has some power in his hands and is very successful when he is a threat to go high with his kicks.  He is not generally hailed as a striker, but he appears comfortable on his feet and his strikes are very smooth.  He lands in combination and with some power.

Ray has good wrestling.  His takedowns are very good and then when he ends up on top, his control is very solid.  He makes very good transitions.  Also of note is that he has submission ability.  Ray is very big for the lightweight division and when he gets a hold of an opponent they feel his strength.  Another thing that is evident in Ray’s game is that he very athletic.  This is certainly an advantage in the cage for him.  Ray does a good job finishing takedowns as well as changing levels.  I would like to see him more committed to his implementing the threat of a takedown.  There are times when he was put in bad positions, which of course I would like to see avoided.

Ray is at his best when he is aggressive and mixing things up well between his striking and wrestling.  he is a well rounded enough fighter to make an impact in the UFC.  I believe he could be the next lightweight the UFC targets.  While unsure of his contract status with Cage Warriors, I think it is safe to assume that he is on UFC’s radar.
