MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Lightweights – #6 – Bekzod Abdurakhmonov

The sixth of our lightweight prospects this year is Uzbekistan native, Bekzod Abdurakhmonov. Bekzod trains out of Boston, Mass. He has bekzod-mugspent time training at Team Sityodtong to improve his striking skills.  Currently Bekzod has a 6-0 professional record.  Also, he is just 24-years old, making him a really intriguing prospect.

Bekzod is an elite level wrestler with international wrestling experience. He was a Division I All-American at Clarion University and an Olympic hopeful for the nation of Uzbekistan. He won the bronze medal in the world championships recently.  His wrestling for MMA is some of the best we have seen. He has superb technique and powerful takedown ability. There would not be many fighters that he would not be able to takedown.  He has a fantastic base on the ground, his positioning is great and his transitions are lightning quick.  He knows how to control fighters.  He is not just a lay and pray fighter, he has looked for finishes in all of his fights and not one of his fights has gone to decision.  He is also good at getting a dominant position and landing strikes.  He is aggressive on the ground and always moving.  This can be quite taxing on opponents.  His chokes are very solid, which he has used to finish fights.

Bekzod’s striking is still a work in progress.  He hasn’t needed to display it that much as he has been dominant on the ground.  Bekzod has talked about Olympic competition, so I am not sure if he plans on focusing first on wrestling and then MMA.  In that way he reminds of Henry Cejudo.  He does not have the wrestling credentials of Cejudo, but he certainly is an elite wrestler.  I believe he can be an elite MMA fighter.  He has the base to do well.  He is surrounded by a solid camp.  Perhaps he does seek to compete in the Olympics in 2016, but he could still be one for UFC to take note of.
