MMA Sun 2015 Prospect Spotlight – The Lightweights – #4 – Marc Diakiese

The fourth ranked lightweight prospect is a promising up and comer out of the U.K. by the name of Marc Diakiese. Diakiese is only 21-years MarcDiakold, but is already showing tons of potential.  There is a new and exciting crop of prospects emerging from the U.K. and we believe that Diakiese may be one of the ones to lead the way.  He already holds a professional record of 6-0.

Diakiese is very effective in striking and is very aggressive.  He is also unpredictable.  He throws a mixture of everything.  He uses flying knees, spinning kicks and solid combinations.  Marc is very tall for the lightweight division and as he grows he will continue to learn to use his reach as an advantage.  He is very flashy at times.  Sometimes that is a good thing and there are other times it can be dangerous.  He also seems to do a good job with his movement on his feet.  He has good lateral movement, which he uses to avoid damage.  He has very effective kicks that he uses more and more.

While most people would probably first regard Diakiese as a striker, I was more impressed with certain aspects of his grappling.  Diakiese has some of the best throws and takedowns from within the clinch position among the prospects we have scouted.  He is dangerous when he gets a body lock. Diakiese is very athletic and it shows in his fights.  He is very difficult to keep on his back.  His top pressure is very good and his submission defense is also very solid.

One of my concerns with Marc is that he does pour it on in the early rounds and seems to tire in later rounds.  That could be a big problem in the UFC.  I think some of that will fix with experience as he learns to pace himself.

I am reluctant to make a big name UFC comparison for Diakiese, but there are elements of his game that remind me of Jon Jones.  He does not have the wrestling pedigree of Jones, but he has a similar style of takedowns from a body lock.  He also, like Jones will have a height and reach advantage against most opponents.  I would love to see him seek out someone like Greg Jackson to help him with that aspect of his game.  Marc currently trains at All Stars in Sweden, which is home to several high level fighters.  Currently fighting for BAMMA, I would like to see Marc slowly take a step up in competition, but I do not believe it will be long until he is UFC ready.  Currently, Marc is scheduled to fight Jack McGann at BAMMA 19, which should be a tough fight.
