MMA Sun 2014 Prospect Spotlight: The Welterweights – #8 – Sergey Khandozhko

Coming in at number 8 is Russian Sergey Khandozhko. Sergey is one of a host of Russian welterweights who is proving himself to be a legit force within the world of MMA. Khandozhko is just 21-years old, so he is one of the younger Russian prospects, however he has already amassed a 14-1 career mark.

Sergey trains out of #1 Fight Club in Moscow, Russia. Sergey has a vast striking background including karate and boxing. In fact, he is a Russian, European and World hand-to-hand combat champion.  This has translated well into his MMA career thus far.  He has shown very good hands, with good power in his punches.  Including one punch knockout power.  He has shown power in both hands.  Sergey is at his best when he is at distance and can pick apart his opponents. He puts together nice combinations.  He has good knees, which he has used to finish fights.  He has a solid sprawl and takedown defense, which he has been known to use to reverse to get top position.  Although he looks to have decent hips, he really needs to tighten up his takedown defense and ground game.  Against a high level wrestler he could have some issues and we could see the potential of him being controlled on the mat.  He actually looks to have a decent guard from which he is a threat, but he takes a little too much damage from that position.  Sergey’s ground and pound is quite effective as well.  He has very good size and length that if he can utilize with a jab he could be even more effective.  We think that Sergey has a really bright future.  Given his age and current skill set we expect him to continue to develop and improve.  As he gains more experience and training he will be a real prospect to keep your eyes on.

The UFC has show a great desire to sign Russian fighter recently.  I would have to imagine that Sergey could get a really good look soon.  He has plans to stay active, with fights lines up in February and March.   I think 2014 could be a really big year for Sergey.  Keep an eye on this kid.
